Funny story. Krysti was taking the train to midtown with me with the intention to walk around while I went to shoot Molly Crabapple and herĀ Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School. Unfortunately, Krysti fell from a pole on the train and nearly broke her leg….(that was the funny part) Leaving her to doodle in a conference room at the MOMA for several hours. I was pleased to find that at the end of the day, I made it into a few sketches. Its all about the adventure ears, I wore that day.
There are few things I miss more about childhood than being in class with a vague project idea, a thick stack of white paper, and buckets of colorful pens and pencils. It really made me use my imagination.
The other day, I was shooting a project at the MOMA that involved some lucky teenagers and my most loved childhood atmosphere.
I think that over the next month or so, I’m going to set a day of the week where I set my house up like a 5th grade art class and have my adult friends over for some childlike fun.
Gala, Krysti, and I welcomed spring by traveling out to the end of Queens, walked in a parade as the only snowflakes in the area, and got smothered in a sea of colorful talcum powders.
It was to celebrate Holi. An Indian word that translates to “festival of color”
The community would come up and cover you with these powder and water guns full of dyed water, and say “Happy Phagwa”
Due to my bad memory, I remembered the pronunciation of Phagwa, by thinking of one of my favorite meat treats, foie gras. mmmmm
Anyway, it was pretty fantastic adventure. The day became more amusing as we ventured further away from the parade and closer to Manhattan.
The other day during breakfast with my vegan friends Justin and Meghan, I found out that most Bloody Marys are NOT in fact vegan. How unfortunate! Blame the horseradish.
It was during this meal that Justin had told me about his plan to take a photo of Meghan every single day of the year. His ambition to meet up with her everyday for 365 days straight has been the only thing that has kept me feeling inspired recently. So today I’m stirring up a project for personal use and not just for work purpose.
The other day, as the snow melted, and I took the dog for her usual walk around the block, she did that thing that everyone is guilty of.Ā She leaped right into a huge murkey puddle that she had mistaken for solid ground.
I’ve been slacking on my 365 photo project, but instead of cheating and backdating different photo entries, I’m just going to roll them all into this entry about things I love, recently.
Adding eyelashes to everything: (81/365) Models in in magazines, coffee stains on my white desk, ducks I’ve sewn. Everything is more fun with lashes.
Birthday parties for places. Not people. (82/365)
Music! (83/365) I’ve been listening to a lot of Television Personalties and Gogol Bordello while I work and clean. Keeps me awake, makes me smile, and furthers my boner for Eugene Hutz.
Eugene Hutz: The above featured photo truly is like Magic Eye for vaginas. We both wear torn socks on our arms, stem from Eastern Europe, and drink wine from the bottle. I think thats a good base for marriage, no?
Cartoons and comics: I’ve watched nearly every episode ofĀ Flapjack and read all of the Winsor McCay in my house since its been raining outside.
The Kitchen: I love my office. Its got stacks of hard drives, good speakers, all of my pens and scissors in neat little tins, and a huge window in place of a wall. I could sit there all day but now that its snowing, its been slightly too chilly to be so close to an 8 ft tall window for more than an hour. So I’ve grabbed the laptop and relocated to the kitchen! I like it here, too. I’m within arms reach to fresh coffee and the cookie jar.
Handmade jewelry: (84/365) Bee stopped by the other day and bedazzled a pair of harmonica earrings she made me for Christmas. It inspired me to make some earrings of my own! So I went through my bone collection and made a simple pair out of buffalo teeth. I love them!
This snow: (85/365) This morning, still too tired to get my layers on, I took the dog out in the anti outfit:Ā A slip, cotton hoodie, and Doc Martins. I was fully aware of the huge chunks of snow falling from the sky and the fact that I was about to catch a cold. But when I got outside and it was actually pretty nice out. I wasn’t freezing and it wasn’t cold enough for the snow to stick. I pranced around the snow and stepped in puddles for a while before coming back up and making some tea. Now, I’m just enjoying the view from the other side.
other things I’m enjoying:
Emails of personalized poems from friends.
Getting Netflix and handwritten letters in the mail, on the same day.
The thought of going to Los Angeles for a visit, soon.
MyĀ tumblr. WordPress, take note on layouts for idiots.
I recently took a look back at old journals and sketch books from when I was 15 and these seem to be the things that have never changed and that hopefully never will:
My favorite food is tako. Japanese for octopus.
My favorite action is peeling things. Anything from oranges to glue off my hands.
My favorite smell is a tie between Windex, sulfur, and Ā Gardenias (which has been bottled up and sold as a spray).
My favorite color is white. It makes me think of a blank canvas or a clean room.
The best album ever is the Shape of Punk to Come by Refused. Its not even my opinion. Its just a fact.
What are your favorites? Perhaps you’ll change my mind…
The other day I got to spend some time with Justin and Lucy. Played video games with Justin and “Please don’t accidently take off my finger in this game of tug-o-war” with Lucy.
Justin knew I was feeling a bit down recently and made me a mix before I left. Needless to say, he lifted my sprits and warmed my little ole’ heart which probably smelt like rotting gruyere cheese beforehand.
Heres what was on it:
1. the knife – pass this on
2. fever ray – when i grow up
3. dangermouse and sparklehorse – little girl (featuring julian casablancas)
4. rainer maria – tinfoil
5. jawbox – savory
6. alkaline trio – this could be love
7. pinback – penelope
8. reverie sound revue – you don’t exist if i don’t see you
9. camera obscura – happy new year
10. dinosaur jr. – feel the pain
11. dave rawlings machine – sweet tooth
My friend James is full of random ridiculous quotes and ideas. So much so that I’ve made a twitter account to document the things that he says that make me laugh, sometimes.
One of his ridiculous ideas was to become a bear. So with the help of a brown hoodie, some fake fur, and some scrap felt, I’m making it happen.
