How ‘Bout You

Fisher King Erik Roseillustration by Erik Rose

I have watched The Fisher King almost every night for the past two weeks.

  • It took me in with its monologue on ‘yuppie inbreeding’
  • Kept my attention with the dance sequence in Grand Central
  • And won my heart with Michael Jeters message delivery

This makes 3 movies that involve drag and Robin Williams that I consider to be my favorite.

  • Mrs. Doubtfire
  • The Birdcage
  • The Fisher King

This really is a wonderful movie, redemption without the schmaltz. It is touching in the way that only something outrageous and askew can be, that and I have always loved the song “Lydia the Tattooed Lady.” Or maybe it is just meaningful because it is not afraid to show people in all their vulnerable and awkward sincerity and do it without poking fun. Anyway, great movie, thanks for making me remember it.

The Japanese baseball shirt that Jeff Bridges is wearing in the elevator at the start of this scene is the same shirt he wears years later in a scene in the film The Big Lebowski. I have always wanted that shirt.
